How it works
Three steps. One crew.
Pick a habit with your friends
Gym four times a week, no takeout, ten pages a night. You choose what counts.
Check in each time you do it
A photo, a workout from Health, a saved place, or your word. Everyone sees it.
Miss one and you pay into the pot
The fine goes on the group's tally. The pot becomes the trip, the dinner, the round.
Why it works
Willpower is a bad plan. Your friends are a good one.
Every habit app bets on you. Packt bets on the people who'd notice if you quit. Here's why that works.
-
Losing hurts more than winning feels good.
Behavioral economists call it loss aversion: the same amount of money motivates far more when it's yours to lose than when it's yours to gain. In a thirteen-week trial, people who stood to lose a small daily amount hit their step goal on more days than people offered the same amount as a reward.1 In another, people who put their own money on the line lost several times more weight than people who didn't.2 Packt is built on that asymmetry. The stake is small. The fact that it's yours is the point.
-
Your friends are your habits.
Health behaviors spread through friendships. In the famous Framingham study, when someone's close friend became obese, their own odds rose sharply, more than for siblings or spouses.3 The effect runs both ways. In group exercise studies, people pushed longer when a teammate's result depended on them than when working alone.4 A Packt makes that dependence explicit: your check-in is on the group's scoreboard, your miss feeds the group's pot.
-
Being seen changes what you do.
Promising yourself is cheap. Promising people who will see the result is not. Packt makes every check-in and every miss visible to your crew, with proof when the habit calls for it. Not surveillance, just the same reason you run faster on race day than on a treadmill.
-
Rituals beat resolutions.
Habits form through repetition in a stable context, and the research puts the median somewhere around two months, with a wide range. The same study found that missing a single day didn't derail people.5 That's why a Packt is a cadence, not a streak you can shatter, why the daily check-in is a shared ritual with its own moment in the chat, and why your crew can grant you a pass when life happens.
-
You pick the habit. You pick the stake. You pick the crew.
Motivation lasts when it's yours.6 Nobody assigns you a goal in Packt. You choose what counts, what a miss costs, and who gets to hold you to it. The group only enforces what you already decided.
The pot is a tally, not a bank. The money was never the prize. Showing up with your people is.

Proof that fits the habit
No honor system unless you want one.
Camera
A photo taken right then, in the app. No camera roll.
Health
Workouts from Apple Health or Health Connect, with a minimum length.
Places
Check in when you're at the gym, the library, the pool.
Honor
Your word, for habits a photo can't prove. Your crew knows you.
The pot and the roast
Miss a day. Hear about it.
Every fine lands in the group chat, where your crew can do what crews do. The pot grows toward whatever you're saving for, and Settle up shows who owes what.
Packt never touches your money. The tally is the point.

Pass when life happens
Sick? Wedding? The crew decides.
Ask for a pass on a fine and say why. Your group votes, and a majority waives it. Fair beats strict.
Sam asks for a pass on $5
“Was sick all week. Doctor's note in the chat.”
